Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Minnesota
An unmarried couple start living together - the agreement is that both parties would pay half. They purchased furnishings which they both paid of. Female purchased with her own money a Washer/Dryer set. She loses her job, they break up but stay living in the same house due to the lease. She can't afford to pay her portion. He decides to move out and takes everything - all of the new furniture and the washer/dryer. Holding for ransom sort of speech. She knows she owes money. But she got left with only their beds. Some of the stuff is in storage and some he has decided to use in his new place. What legal action if any does she have? Is it considered theft? He is still demanding that she pay him back. It doesn't seem legal.

Hello. The person (presumably, the woman in this instance) with the legal issue should make a rough estimate of the value of the items in issue and then telephone a private attorney who will be happy to provide her with a legal opinion of her rights and options. This website provides general information, not private legal counsel. Some attorneys are available seven days for emergency legal needs. Many attorneys will confer initially at no charge. Then, if legal work is performed, some attorneys will provide a reduced fee for financial hardship. Some attorneys may also assist you in limited scope manner to conserve legal costs. All the best.
