Legal Question in Immigration Law in Minnesota

Marraige to a non US Citizen

I am a natural born citizen of the US and I have been dating someone who is not a legal US Citizen, but has a legal US visa right now. He has been applying to get his visa renewed before it expires, in a few months, but has been having trouble. The question has come up about getting married but we've only been together for 6 months. I know that if we were to marry, with the proper paperwork, he could become a citizen also. Basically I want to know, what do we need to do to 'prove' that this marraige is legitimate? Also, what if after a few years, it doesn't work out between us? What would be the legal reprocussions/consequences? He also moved away for a job, how does it work if we're not living together for a while, but we're married?

Marriage is proven by evidence of a legitimate relationship, including photos, joint-financial documents, affidavits from friends and family, and other documentary evidence.

If the marriage ends after he receives his conditional permanent residence, he may still be able to keep his "green card.".

It's best to be married and living together leading up to the marriage interview. Extraordinary circumstances must be proved to show why a married couple is not living together in the same residence.
