Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Minnesota

Former boyfriend/fiance tries to take back car he purchased for me

My former fiance purchased a car for me last April. It is a 2003 Doge Neon SE, and paid about $7500 for it. Never was there any written or verbal communication that it was ''conditional'' upon marriage. Toward the end of January of this year, HE ended our relationship, and now has an attorney sending me letters that I am to return the car or the cash value of the car. The Title is in my name. There is no lein on the car. No written scheduled repayment. I understood the car was a gift. Now that he no longer wants to be in the reationship, can he take the car back? He claims it was conditional upon our marriage. That is a lie. I never asked for the car, he bought it on his own free will. Please advise!

If it is a complete gift you are entitled to keep the car.

There is no "palimony" in MN without a written agreement.

You are on firm ground to assert your rights.

Call if you would like me to respond to the attorney's demands.
