Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Minnesota

I'm in the process of starting a clothing line, and am working with an illustrator student. The student agreed to illustrate shirt designs for me, and in return he would get a portion of what was made from the shirt being sold. My question is then, would I (my company) own the copyright to these designs?

There are many different options here. The crux of the situation is what are the exact terms of your deal are with the Student. You could work out several types of deals with the Student.

1. You own the entire copyright

2. The Student allows you to use the work on your shirts and no where else, while the student maintains the rights.

3. You lease the rights for a certain time..etc..

Just make sure your arraignments are clear to each other, I recommend committing everything to writing.
