Legal Question in Employment Law in Minnesota
I want to know if an employer can demand proof of auto insurance if employees are not driving for work (I don't claim any mileage reimbursement, and I take the bus to and from work)? In my case, having a car and providing this information was not a condition of my employment when I was hired, and is not a part of my current job description. I essentially do clerical work that does not require me to leave the building. I already provided the documentation, but the request seemed a bit questionable. I believe one of my coworkers does not even own a car at this juncture, and may be unable to provide the requested documentation. It also seems like a potentially discriminatory practice since African Americans and Latinos are statistically less likely to own cars than white Americans. Does my employer really have a right to this information?
