Legal Question in Employment Law in Minnesota

Can an employer move you from salary to hourly with no notice?

I have been a salary employee at my company (a landscape company) for the past 5 months, last pay day my boss gave me a check that reflected a reduced hourly rate. He explained that I was no longer needed on salary, so he deducted pay for weeks that I did not meet forty hours - which ended up being a loss of $300 in one paycheck - with no warning. Is this legal? Are there any ways to fight this? I guess I am ok with becoming an hourly employee again - but I would have liked some warning that my pay was being garnished. any suggestions???

Cannot do retroactively. How much of a deduction was it?

Make a request for difference in writing up to date when contract was changed, with a CC to your attorney, and give them 5 business days to make payment. Otherwise they will have penalties added per statute.
