Legal Question in Employment Law in Minnesota
My husband has been self employed all of his life. He is now 54 years old. He has had a building maintenance contract for the last 20? years for a medical center. They have a new administrator who is renewing his contract at 40% less than what he has been getting paid for many years. The new contract also has him being paid by the hour, and punching in on a time clock. He signed the contract because otherwise we would lose everything! It is not easy to find a job at 54 making the money that he was making. Is it legal to require him to punch in and get an hourly wage when he is self employed? He now has certain hours that he is required to be there. He carries business insurance and has for all these years. He also had their cleaning contract for about 20 years so he had several employees. They took that from him a couple of years ago when another administrator came on board. Now this new administrator is dong this. Thank you.

Sounds like they are turning him into an Employee.
He should find out where his benefit package is and when he can take his paid vacation.
It is a matter of contract, and he is free to develop new work or other sources of income. He should have an attorney review his contract, and perhaps revise when it comes up for renewal.
Hopefully it is not too late.
