Legal Question in Employment Law in Minnesota
I got laid off by my company back in January, after almost 4 years of employment. The reason I was given was that the company was bankrupt. Since then, I have learned that they are not bankrupt and it was just an excuse. I never received another reason why I was laid off.
I now have a job lead at a competing company that is very promising. I honestly do not remember if I signed a non compete with my previous employer or not. Also, the competing company was not a competitor at my time of being hired. So, my dilemma is should I move forward with the competing company as if I did not sign a non compete, or should I reach out to my ex employer and ask for documentation to see if I ever did sign one? The only thing I worry about in asking for documentation is that they will then do anything they can out of spite to make sure I do not get a job there.
If you could help me out i would greatly appreciate it.

Under MN law you can request in writing reason for your termination
Also you can request your Employee File without specifying NC
You may request a copy of your employee file without identifying any other employer or prospective employer.
