Is it legal for a company to fire you if someone reports a false statement about you but the company didn't investigate the problem?

Employers in Minnesota generally have a "qualifed privilege" to make or repeat statements about your job performance. There are exceptions or qualifications to the privilege, and it does not apply in every case. For example, if the employer or person who made the statement had "actual malice" a defamation common law tort action could be brought. Also, many statutory claims such as discrimination and retaliation allow money for harm to reputation as a separate element of damages. The facts drive the law, as my old torts professor used to say. Call me if you wish to discuss the facts.
