Legal Question in Employment Law in Minnesota

I live in Minnesota an at will employment state. About four months ago i was hired by a privately owned company as a buyer. I was given a very small amount of buying responsibilities, most of my resposibilities consisted of sorting, counting and putting parts back into stock. I had no verbal or written warning or even a "heads up" about poor work performance. Last week my boss and the HR person came up to me, no warning, and said" we are lettting you go, you are not what i was looking for" also mummbled something about not keeping her informed of things(had no idea what that meant), and I was escorted aout the door. Ten minutes before this happended she did the same to another*buyer" she had hired only he had not yet passed his 90 day probation. My question is, since she had no reason to fire me, shouldn't she have laid me off?
