Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Minnesota

Breaking of lease

I am trasnferring out-of-state with my company and am expected to be at the new location in 3-4 weeks. I am currently on a month-to-month lease for my apartment. I am required to give a 60 day notice when moving out. Is there any type of law in MN that would allow me to give less than a 60 day notice and not be held liable to any additional fees, or paying for rent when I will not be occupying the apartment because of a work-related transfer?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Breaking of lease

The lease is controlling here. However, if you to your landlord with the situation he may waive the requirement if he can rent the apartment in the shortened time frame. You should offer to pay for an ad to rent it and be extra helpful in showing the apt in best form.

If that option is not available you could ask your employer for help with the rent and added fees as part of your relocation expenses. I presume they are paying for your move.
