Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Minnesota
Electric bill
My friend has had trouble paying her large electric bill for the house she rents and has fallen behind. Her landlord has threatened to evict her if she doesn't get caught up, and informed her that the bill she's paying is for the house, a barn, a shop, and a water pump for both houses on the property. She has access to nothing but the house she is renting, and is paying for all electric and water usage in the other buildings on the property. Aren't there laws against this? (She does not have a lease, he wanted to do a month to month agreement claiming he thought it would be best for them in case they wanted to move out.)
