Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Minnesota

Electricity theft.

I live in an apartment building managed by the university I attend. In order to increase security in the back of the building the school decided to install new lighting to brighten up the area at night.

Each apartment has a back door with a porch light. What the school did was chose 9 of the 26 apartments and replaced the old porch lights with new fixtures that go on and off automatically, and they removed they light switches from inside our apartments.

The part that troubles me is that the light fixture is running off my electic bill and i dont think that it is fair that only some apartments have to eat the cost of this.

My question is: Can they do this? Are there any laws that dictate how the lighting in common areas of an apartment building should be paid for? We were not even given an option. I thought that common area lighting is on a separate bill which is tallied into apartment rent.

Re: Electricity theft.

If it is on your porch is is not a common area. The light benefits your apt. and is a security improvement. You have no complaint.
