security deposit
i am planning on taking my former
landlord to court to get my security
deposit back. would a lawyer be more
beneficial since i have moved out of
state?

You are likely going to have to appear if it goes to a hearing.
But you may be able to avoid it if you have an atty send a properly worded Demand Letter citing the relevant statutory penalty provisions.
