Will a copyright save me now?

I'm not certain I have clicked on the proper ''AREA of LAW'':

I have been writing a book for a friend of mine. His autobiography he asked me to do and that I have gotten info by phone over a period of 4 years. I live in Minnesota and he lives in Arizona. I sent my manuscript to him for proofreading and to be certain I have all the facts correct. He is punch drunk due to a boxing career and gets things screwed up. It happened his daughter, who had wanted me to write this, came from Washington to visit him and saw the manuscript. I wondered why I never received it back in the mail and called him. He said his daughter took the manuscript and is going to do the book herself and that she told him not to tell me. (He is quite childlike in his thinking now) After years of work, and research, I would like to know if I quickly send in for a copyright I will be able to prevent her from stealing my work. Or, being she is one of his children, should I just let it go and charge it all up to being the friend I wanted to be in doing this for him anyway?

You have rights already but filing a copyrigh, properly, will give you more protection. She can't legally steal your work for herself. My firm focuses on Internet, media and entertainment law.
