Based on the few facts you provided, it appears that your friend who was assaulted has a possible claim for civil assault and/or battery. As for yourself, depending upon whether or not you were "within the zone of danger" with regard to the assault, you too may have a claim for damages. As with any personal injury claim, the value of the case is dependent upon the extent of the damages. If as a result of the assault your friend sustained severe injuries, the claim can possibly be worth pursuing. Other recourse you and your friend may have would be to file a complaint with the police.
