Abandoned or unclaimed property
If someone left an old appliance at my house for ten years do I
have to notify them if I am going to get rid of it?

It would be safer to give them written notice that after, say, 60 days that you will dispose of it. Get a proof of mailing (.90 at the post office) and keep a copy. After all, 60 days added to 10 years isn't much! Also, maybe they'll take it for you and save you the expense of having it hauled away. As to whether you HAVE to give notice, it probably depends on how you came into possession of it. Were you their landlord and they movedout? Did they ask to to store it for them? Did they pay you to store it for them?
