Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Minnesota

I bought a house in Minnesota 6 months ago and have now received a water bill charging me for the previous owner's final water bill that they failed to pay. I contacted the city and they said that the charges are lienable and stay with the house and that I am responsible for them. The only advice they could give me was to contact my realtor to contact the seller's realtor and ask the previous owner to pay the bill. This was a traditional sale, not a short sale or foreclosure. What is my recourse if they don't pay for their bill?

Your recourse is against the previous owner. You could file suit in Conciliation Court. You would remain obligated to the creditor.

You could also have a claim against the title company that closed the transaction if they failed to ensure the final water bill was paid at closing.
