Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Minnesota

Ending a lease

From what I understand, if a tenant buys a home, they are able to end their lease. Is this true?

Re: Ending a lease

Not unless your lease contains a provision which says you can do that. Otherwise, better wait until the end of your lease.

Lots of folks who are looking for a home and rent while they are in that process obtain a provision in their lease which allows them to terminate the lease when they find a house. That, however, is a special deal based on their contract, not a legal loophole that applies to everybody.

Take a close look at your lease and see what it says. You probably have no such provision. If you don't, it may pay to have a chat with your landlord or the landlord's manager. Perhaps you can make a deal with them; or just wait for the lease to expire.

Good luck.
