Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Minnesota

sale of vehicle stored at my house

I have a truck that was stored at my house for what was sposed to be a couple months. After 8 months I tried to contact the owner several times over the course of the next 4 months, with no success. I contacted other people who knew him an they could not contact him. After a year and a half I called a scrapper to come haul it away. A few days later the owner showed up and wanted to know where his truck was and is now filing charges against me for ''stealing his truck''. And the police officer that contacted me said I will go to jail if I dont provide paperwork showing I was the owner, which I am not. What can I do?

When someone leaves property in your care, it is a bailment. That means you must provide due care for that property. You cannot dispose of it unless the property is abandoned. For it to be abandoned, you must submit a Notice of abandonment and serve that notice on the owner. Only after that is accomplished, or there is an order of the court, can you dispose of the asset.
