Legal Question in Traffic Law in Minnesota

Motor Scooter Law

I am from Madelia, Minnesota and I bought a motor scooter about two years ago and then just this summer they told me that I can't ride it any more because there is a law saying I can't. The thing is two years ago when I got my first scooter the police said that there wasn't a law about driving it on the road and just told me to stay off the sidewalk, which I did so. But then when more people got a scooter one of them a kid in my class was abusing the privilage. The police now gave me papers saying that they were from the state saying I can't drive it. I was wondering why they didn't inforce the law before. Why can't they just take the privilage any from the person that did the wrong, not everybody.

Re: Motor Scooter Law

I like Madelia. My daughter used to teach there.

My check of Minnesota law found the follwoing:

84.802 Youthful operators; prohibitions.

(a) A person under 16 years of age may not operate an

off-road vehicle.

(b) Except for operation on public road rights-of-way that

is permitted under section 84.804, a driver's license issued by

the state or another state is required to operate an off-road

vehicle along or on a public road right-of-way.

(c) An owner of an off-road vehicle may not knowingly allow

it to be operated in violation of this section.

Assuming you are under sixteen, I don't think there is much you can do.

After you turn sixteen, you would probably have to get a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license before you could operate that thing, because the deifnintion of "motorcycle" is pretty broad.

Better stick witht the bicycle for now.
