Legal Question in Traffic Law in Minnesota

Multiple stops-same officer-same day

I was stopped and cited for no insurance. After the officer requested the paperwork he kept asking me question's. I informed the officer my paperwork was on the floorboard - passenger side of my conversion van. Ignored. He cited me. I continued to my mechanics home. Three hours latter upon return to my residence the officer stopped me again, threating to impound my vehicule, called me a lair several times, and then told me the place I was at is under investigation for illegal activites. Is this multple stops legal?

Re: Multiple stops-same officer-same day

An officer is supposed to have probable cause to make a stop - that means he needs reason to believe that it is more likely than not that a crime has been committed.

OR he can make a stop for safety reasons, such as to let you know that he sees something wrong with your vehicle.

That said, I must comment that I have difficulty understanding your question. For example, was the conversion van the vehicle that the officer stopped? And what does your mechanic have to do with it?

You need to actually speak with a lawyer. My contact info is at www.mn-dwi.com.

Re: Multiple stops-same officer-same day

An officer may stop you multiple times, even on teh same day, so long as the officer has a reasonable, articulable suspicion that criminal conduct has occured. Probable cause is not necessary for the stop and, all too often, that term is used too loosely. "Probable Cause" is something more than a reasonable suspicion and requires much more conduct indicating that criminal conduct has occurred.
