Legal Question in Traffic Law in Minnesota
The regulations and costs to get into the taxi business legitimatly are very high. Penalties are steep for operating freelance style. However if approached and asked to provide a ride you have no legal obligation to refuse the request. Here is my question. Would it be illegal to not use the words taxi or cab but simply mark a vehicle with accurate information? For example "Your names transportation"? This accurately states the purpose of the vehicle. However if you went around areas people use taxi cabs that marking would cause people to initiate the request without you soliciting. Legal or not?
1 Answer from Attorneys
Most likely this would be seen as a freelance operation and would be fined accordingly. The State's argument would likely rest on the fact that, while you don't use the word "taxi" or "cab" you are essentially providing the same services, and that is your intent.
