Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Minnesota

Joint checking account ownership after death

My mother and I had a joint checking account so I could pay her bills when she was ill. When she passed away, there was a remaining balance in the account. Does that balance belong to me, or does it need to be used to pay for income taxes and other items? My mother also owned a home which is being sold and split per her will.

Re: Joint checking account ownership after death

"Joint" should mean that it is now yours. I would suggest that you go clean out the account; but then await further developments before spending any of the money just in case.
