Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Minnesota
my legal rights to inheritance and or back child support
I am a 35 yr old just wondering what my rights are when it comes to my deadbeat father whos now 64. I havent seen him since i was a small baby and recently seen an article about some of his businesses and how well he was doing. Curious as to how i can get some of the money that i feel he owes me. so that i can take care of my family better than he took care of his. help would be appreciated.

Re: my legal rights to inheritance and or back child support
You have no specific rights to anything from him, based on the limited information that you provided. In the event that he died without a will, you would inherit part of his estate under Minnesota's intestate statute. If he does a will, it is within his discretion to cut you out and leave you nothing.
The last time I checked, the statue of limitations on unpaid child support is ten years. If you are 35, it's way to late to collect that now - and the person with the claim for it is your mother, not you.
My suggesion: pick up the phone and call the man. There are probably parts of the story about why you don't hear from him that you have never heard. You have a lot more to gain than just a possible inheritance by opening a channel of communication.
One more reason to call him: carrying a chip on your shoulder can shorten your life, and you wouldn't want him to out live you.
