what exactly is the $$ to be spent for concerning a minor child I know receipts have to be kept - but for what?

It seems you are referring to Social Security benefits and your duties as representative payee for the child. Social Security will be able to tell you want they are looking for in the annual accounting. It should be pretty simple if you have the monthly deposits flow into a bank account for the benefit of the child, and then write checks out of the account, making notes on the checks identifying the purpose of the payment. However, the money probably cannot be used for covering expenses that are your duties of food, clothing, shelter, and nurture owed to the child.
