Legal Question in Business Law in Mississippi

Commercial lease

I had to vacate a building due to loss of revenue. I met with the owners of the building and have attempted to help them lease the building. I vacated the building June 15, 2002 and the building has not leased or sold since. Due to my finances, I am not able to pay anything to the owners of the building. I have, however, paid to keep the exterior of the building clean by cutting the grass and etc. I have also shown the building several times for the owners. I received an email from the owners of the building today wanting to know what I intend to do about the back lease. Please advise what my options are.

Re: Commercial lease

The owners have a duty to mitigate damages by making reasonable efforts to lease the property again. If they did not make reasonable efforts, they would not be entitled to rent for that time period. It seems they made some effort though so you would probably be liable for something. Consider negotiating a compromise settlement. There is a three year statute of limitations that applies after any default.
