Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Mississippi

What is the punishment for verbal abuse? My step-father and father had a conversation in a public place to which my father took offense? They have had one run in before in which harsh words were mutually exchanged but no threats were made. Does my father have any legal grounds for suits and does my step-father face jail time?
