Legal Question in Constitutional Law in Mississippi
discrimination
i am an otr truck driver i run team with my husband from fl to ca every week whilw passing through harris county ms on sun am arnd 530am i was stopped by harris county dot for a ''routine stOP' now i was not speeding i wasnt weaving in and out of traffic i wasnt doing anything wrong except i was the only semi truck going east bound at the time. The officer was ver nice as far as ms officers go, and he oed me to an inspection bay off of the hwy for a complete inspection where we found that my cdl was suspended--no reason listed no nothing just that it was suspended. i got the problem resolved on tues as mon was a holiday and when i called harris cty to find out how much my ticket was for driving a commercial vehicle while disqualified was i was told the judge set the fine amount of $615.40 now i know 4 other people who received the same ticket in ms.& not 1 of their tickets was over$300. it cost me only $25.00 to get my license reinstated and i was never informed of my license being suspended. also a ticket for the same offense on a reg dl is a set $550 )+/-)how can this not be discrimination.i never had any offense in this state & my t/t both rcvd cvsa stickers the same night on inspection shldnt that count for something also

Re: discrimination
Discrimination is a fact of life, and happens every day. What matters is whether the discrimination at issue is illegal discrimnation. The scenario you've depicted does not demonstrate any illegal discrimination. There are very few standard fines. Generally, fines are in ranges and can be applied at a particular level at the discretion of the person in charge. I'm certain that there were circumstances involved in your scenario that were not present in the other scenarios you mentioned. Perhaps your license had been suspended longer. Perhaps the equipment you were driving was different. Perhaps there are different fines for different types of roadways. Perhaps this wasn't your first offense and your friends didn't have any priors. If you really do your homework in comparing your offense to the others you mentioned, I'm certain you would find distinquishing factors. However, even if there were no distinguishing factors, so long as the fine is within the acceptable range provided by law, there is nothing you can do about it.
