Legal Question in Criminal Law in Mississippi

2% bond assessment fees/court costs.

What are bond assessment fees? My uncle was arrested for felony possession of a hand gun, an antique derringer. His bond was $100,000 because he had a felony drug charge 15 years prior to the gun charge. He has not been in any trouble during the 15 years between the felony charges. He was given 2 years, no report probation and told that his court costs would be close to $400. The court costs were way more than $400. He was told the 2% bond assessment fee was the reason for the extremely high court cost.

The State of Mississippi charges a two percent (2%) assessment based on the amount of a person's appearance bond. In the event there is a bond of $100,000.00 the fee charged by the State is $2,000.00 which is collected at the time the fine and other assessments are collected.
