Legal Question in Criminal Law in Mississippi
false allegations
my friend was charged with molestation of a child. The teenager lied because he was angry with my friend, all the allegations are false. How long can the investigation last. What can we do legally to prove he is lying.

The next step is a grand jury indictment. The investigation can continue indefinitely. However, the longer it goes, the chances that evidence will be lost and memory will faid. Also, if evidence relevant to a defense has been lost because of delay, the defendant may have a Constitutional due process defense. However, that generally must involve some sort of intentional or reckless conduct by the police and your friend must prove that the lost evidence could have made a difference.
