i have received a "notice of setting" hearing on a possession charge. what does that mean?

This document means simply that the case has been "Set" for some purpose, generally for trial or for some other "hearing" (such as a hearing to revoke bond, etc.). You need to be sure to be present at that time and place and be prepared then to complete whatever hearing the Court has scheduled.
