Legal Question in Family Law in Mississippi

Adoption, divorce, and child support from 2 men

I was married in 1997 and adopted her little girl in 1998. We were divorced in May of 1999. I have to pay child support but I found Documents where the real father was in contempt of child support. These documents were dated after I adopted her. I don't fully understand what is going on. Is she getting child support from both of us? I adopted this little girl thinking she was mine but since I found those papers I know I'm not. Is there anything I can do to undue the adoption or not have to pay child support?

Re: Adoption, divorce, and support

I dont' know who is getting the child support, but the kid is still definitely yours. The reason the old child support order was never terminated is because of BUREAUCRATIC INEPTITUDE. You see the geniuses who devised the systems in use to collect child support never thought of the eventuality that "all good things must come to an end." It is inconceivable to a bureaucrat that just because a process is put in motion doesn't mean it has to go on forever. I do think though that years after the world has been burnt to a cinder by our finally exhausted sun, that support order will continue to run. This is not necessarily good news for you. First off, you are still the primary obligor, although if you wish to be fair about things, you should probably call child support and straighten the matter out (but try not to get a supervisor. If it is a county run system, the chances are that the higher in the food chain you go, the closer you get to the patronage pot and the dumber the person you wind up talking to). If possible stick with the clerks. They are usually the only ones who haven't been lobotomized. Oh, and good luck.
