Can and individual obtain the necessary documents to file for a divorce without the aide of a lawyer?

You can try this own your own, but your chances of success are very slim. If there are children involved, I would say you would have better odds of being struck by lightning on a sunny day.
You need the assistance of a competent attorney. If you needed surgery, would you go to a surgeon or try to operate on yourself?
