Legal Question in Family Law in Mississippi

Relative Adoptions

I was contacted by my neice who lives in Mississippi who is pregnant and wants me and my husband to adopt her child. Does being a blood relative give us any advantage over a conventional adoption? If so where should we begin the legal process, her state or ours? What should our first course of action be in obtaining permanent custody and adoption. Both of the birth parents have agreed to give up all legal rights to the now unborn child. Any information you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Relative Adoptions

Adoption is controlled by the law of the state where the child lives. If you move the child, the child

must live in the new state for at least 6 months. You should initiate the adoption in Mississippi because

the longer you wait the more problems can occur. The problems could come from your niece or the

father who could oppose the adoption.
