Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Mississippi

Where is the line

I called my landlord to inform her of some things that needed to be fixed and she was really nansty about the whole situation. let me back up, I moved into this mobile home with my daughter and i had a roommate at the time. i pay my rent on time every month, with no problem. my roommate moved out, so a friend of mine is staying with me for the summer. this woman tells me that even tho i pay the rent, this is not my home. she wants to tell me who can and cannot come in my home. i have always paid my rent on time, been here beyond the lease time, both of which is more than her last tenant, and have even made improvements to the place. so even tho i may never own the house, this is still my home. what are my rights?

Re: Where is the line

There is a difference between a guest and a tenant. The landlord does own the home and it is their home and they do have a right to determine who does and does not stay in their home. Now, as a tenant, you have a right to have guests and the landlord cannot interfere with what guests you have and when you have them, but just because you're paying rent, you don't have the right to open the doors to anyone else who wants to stay there. These things are usually covered in a written lease agreement, something I am presuming that you do not have here. If you are paying rent monthly, and the landlord does not agree to the additional persons living in the home, they can evict you upon 30 days notice. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
