Getting sued by landlords, but haven't received security deposit

My former landlords are sueing my roommate and I because they say we did not fulfill our lease. We feel that we have. We paid twelve months of rent on a 12 month contract. They have not given us back our security deposit of $500 back and we moved out over a year ago. Do we need to counter sue? Someone said we needed to get a continuance? I don't even know what that means? We go to court on 6/6/03, so any advice would be appreciated ASAP?

A continuance is a resetting of the court date, to give you more time. I would ask the court for a continuance TODAY - ASAP. You should countersue for the security deposit, but I cannot advise you on the rest of the case because I don't know why you've been sued. In other words, what part of the lease are you accused of violating? Depending on how much money the landlord is seeking, you may need to hire a lawyer.
