Legal Question in Medical Malpractice in Mississippi

Deceased Mother's Medical Bills

I live in Virginia, but my mother resided in Mississippi.

Am I responsible for my mother's medical bills after she has passed? All have been resolved with the exception of one, her radiology bill. She passed on 5/13. The first call we received was from a debt collector for the radiologists. When I spoke to them, they said the total due was $820. I then received a bill for $444.00. On 5/28, they sent me a bill per my request for the full amount due of the $820. I paid the bill in full ($820) by check and sent it certified on 6/16. With the check, I sent a copy of her death certificate and the statement saying I was paying it in full. Now I've received a bill saying she owe's $1040. They are sending the bill to my address in VA and addressing it to me and my mother. Can they come after me for the bill since I asked the final bill to be sent to my address in VA? I was her POA, but understand that as of the day of her death, it was null and void.

Re: Deceased Mother's Medical Bills

You have no responsibility whatsoever for paying your recently deceased mother's medical bills. These are the responsibility of her estate(such as it may be).

And, yes, the POA ceases to have legal effect upon the death of the subject person but is essentially irrelevant to the above issue.
