Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Mississippi

court order to change document

I am having trouble getting a lawyer for my situation. I need to find out if you

have to have a lawyer to change the marital status on a death certificate. I

can't go into details,my in-laws hate me and when my husband died(he was

living with them, helping to care for his ailing father at the time of his

death)they told the funeral director he was divorced.Naturally, when I finally

saw this, I have been trying to find out how to go about correcting it. When I

submitted the death certificate to his life insurance company they told me his

life insurance policy had been already paid out to his grown son. When the

insurance company contacted him about the policy they asked him if his

father has remarried-he lied and said no,knowing full well that his father and

I were married. I was told I need a court order to change the marital status on

the death certificate and then I can finish up everything else. I am in dire

straits with no money and no resources and I don't know what to do.

Re: court order to change document

if it has been less than one year since his death, notify the funeral director. If it has been more than one year, you will need to hire an attorney and go to court to have that info changed. See: http://www.msdh.state.ms.us/msdhsite/index.cfm/31,406,109,76,html
