A creditor has to obtain a Judgment in court before they can file a garnishment. If the company threatening you are not he original creditor then they might be in violation of the fair debt collection practices act.
The other attorney is right on point here. Before a creditor can garnish wages, it has to go to court and obtain a judgment against you. Consult with an attorney in your area for specifics.
