Missouri is an employment at will state. The employment relationship, therefore, only continues so long as both the employer and the employee desire to continue the relationship. When employers ask existing employees to sign non-compete agreements there must be some consideration for the agreement not to compete. One such consideration is continued employment. Based on the facts presented your employer was within its rights to fire you for refusing to sign a non-compete agreement. The employer, in fact, could have faced an invalidation of the remaining non-compete agreements if it failed to terminate you.
