several payroll cks bounced after company closes their doors - any recourse? Small claims court?

Based upon th elimited facts you were able to provide, it appears that you can bring a suit in the circuit court of the county where your employer was located. You may also bring a complaint with the wage and hour division of the Department of Labor.
