Can a restaurant refuse to honor their gift card that has passed their expiration date of a year from purchase?

As a Franchise Attorney I can say the answer is most definitely yes. It's done all the time. That's why tey have an expiration date. Of course, as a matter of maintaining good customer service, more reputable places will honor gift cards that have expired. But that's a matter of policy and not a requirement. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.
