Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Missouri

We live in Missouri but would like our child to go to the public school across the state line in Kansas. We hate to sell our home, in Missouri, and move. Can we rent an apartment in Kansas, change all of our legal documentation such as, taxes, voter registration, drivers license and plates and have all mail sent to the new apartment and claim residency at the new apartment in Kansas, but keep our house in Missouri where we will most likely spend most of our time?

Many people do what you propose. Some are caught, but a significant amount are not. If you defraud the Kansas District that your child attends, they may choose to take action down the road. Obviously, the State of Missouri can go after you for fraudulently changing your license plates, but that happens seldomly. Many people have homes in more than one state, and each of their cars are only licensed in one. Your automobile insure may be able to deny coverage if you claim a loss after paying what could be lower premiums for pretending to live in Kansas. They are not likely to do this unless it is a large claim. Many insurers ask you wher ethe vehicle is kept most, if you lie about that, it come back to bite you.

Good luck
