Legal Question in Consumer Law in Missouri

Copyright laws

Our quilting group (3 people) purchased a set of copyrighted quilt patterns, sharing the cost equally among us. We photocopied the picture and the page which gave the fabric requirements so each member could take it along on fabric shopping trips. (There are several more pages of detailed instructions to each pattern.) We work on our individual quilts at our monthly meeting. The quilts are for our own use. One of the local fabric shops said we were in violation of copyright laws by having the copies and essentially ''banned'' us. Is our group of elderly ladies in violation of the law?

Re: Copyright laws

Probably. Although I haven't seen your patterns, I suspect they are licensed for single use, and each copy violates the copyright. Your best bet is to go to another fabric store! I doubt that the pattern company will sue you, but that is always their option.

I hope this is helpful.
