Hospital bill
When someone owes a large ($40,000) hospital bill and they pass away what happens to the bill? They do not own a house or land.

It becomes a claim against the estate of the dead person. If there is not a will, then the creditor has to file a petition to probate the estate in order to discover if there are assets that will pay the claim. Otherwise, the hospital has to eat the loss. Relatives, unless they sign to become personally responsible, are not responsible for the debts of the dead man.
