Legal Question in Consumer Law in Missouri

I have some medical bills that are owed from a surgery. I was attempting to pay monthly 20 dollars but a collection agency called and said that was not enough and they were garnishing 78% of my paycheck and then wants to take a smaller portion of my paycheck. then they said that they would put a lien on my house. I have not seen any legal judgement against me but they pressured me into giving some of my information to garnish my wages. After reading some about the Missouri Consumer Debt laws I think what they have done is illegal. What other options do I have now?

Under the facts you described, it appears you may have a viable law suit against the collection agency for violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, and possibly some state consumer laws too. Collectors are not allowed to make threats they cannot follow thorugh on. You should consult direclty with a civil torts attorney in your area. Many offer a free or low cost initial consultation. You will need to them to assess the specific facts foyoru situation, in order to determine your best next step. You may also want to report the collection agency to the Attorney General of Missouri and the state where the agency is located. The US Department of Commerce may also have a complaint process through their web site.

Good luck
