Legal Question in Consumer Law in Missouri
Unfair Early Termination Fee
My alarm monitoring company
signed me up for a 5 year contract.
After 2 years, I moved and
discontinued the monitoring of my
alarm. The contract did not make
mention of any early termination
fee, but the company sent me a bill
for the remaining 3 years of the
contract, due in full in 15 days (or
else they're turning it over to a
collection agency). Is this fair
considering there was nothing
spelled out saying that there is an
early termination fee?

Re: Unfair Early Termination Fee
This is a common practice by these companies. There probably is some language in the contract about it. If so, you can probably negotiate the fee down some. If there really is nothing in the contract about this, then you would not have to pay.
