Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Missouri

18 yr o;d phone bill

My husband recieved a letter from a collection agency about a phone bill that is over 18 yrs old from before we were married. We think his son may have used his name to set up this bill without our knowledge. We don't want our good credit ruined but can they still bill us after all this time. We are semi retired & really can't afford this bill. We have had no letters or anything before this that I know of about this bill & we don't have a land line phone in our name & haven't for years since we travel a lot.

Re: 18 yr o;d phone bill

The bill you describe appears to be outside most statutes of limitation. However there are still a few 20 year states in the Union. Also there are things that "restart" the calendar on how old an obligation is. You may do well to hire an attorney to deal with this company, so that you do not accidently trigger a new counting period. They can request a verification of the debt.

Good Luck
