Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Missouri

Old Bill from 1997

We received a bill in the mail this week, from a lumber yard in town from 1997. My husband and I were married in 1999.

The owner was the bookkeeper until about 6 months ago, and since ten years have passed, without a monthly bill, or interest added on, all of a sudden we received a bill for 7,005.32, 2,005.32 being interest just now tacked on.

Is this legal? Since 10 years have passed is there any time limit?

Thanks for the assist.

Nancy

Re: Old Bill from 1997

As long as you made no interim payments in the last five years, and unless you have a written contract requiring payment, the statute of limitations on the debt has run, and it cannot be collected. If you receive court papers or other documents, however, be sure to seek legal advice because if you do not challenge the claim, you could get stuck paying it.
